One-Touch Surfing
One-Touch Surfing is very easy to setup if your Mac supports Hot Function Keys (most systems do with MacOS 9.1.) If the Keyboard control panel on your Mac does not have a Function Keys button as in the picture below then you will need a third party utility like QuicKeys to use One-Touch Surfing via function keys. If not, you will still be able to use One-Touch (or click) Surfing using the Surf Next icon in your Surftron sites window.

Select the Function Keys button and configure one of your functions keys to launch Surftron. (You can do this simply by dragging the Surftron icon from the finder into the area to the right of the function key you wish to configure.)

When Surftron is running, pressing the function key causes Surftron to tell your default browser to surf to the next site that has detected a change. When there are no more changed sites to surf, Surftron will then perform the action as configured in the Auto Surf section of the main Preferences dialog.

Smart Marks
Smart Marks added via Site Sharing are already configured as Smart Marks and have no need to be configured unless the site they represent changes in a way to make the settings invalid. If this occurs or you are adding a site manually then you will need to configure the Smart Mark.

Once a bookmark is added to your sites window you can open the Edit Settings window by selecting the site and clicking the Edit Settings icon.

The first step in configuring a new site is to click Auto Sense. This will query the site to see what kind of data is returned. If a content length or a last modified header is returned then that checkbox will be selected. Few sites return these and most that do, will return a bogus data (an example of a website that returns a good content length header is www.scripting.com.) If neither header is returned or if bogus data is returned then Body Text should be selected.

The default text links works fine for most sites, but in the case when they are insufficient, then you will need to adjust these. Help with Advanced Configuration.

Keyword Watch
Selecting Keyword List... from the Edit menu will bring up the Keyword List dialog.

Type in the text of the keyword you to add to the list and select Add. To remove a keyword from the list, select the word in the list and select Delete. Keywords are NOT case sensitive.

Keywords are shared among all sites. To have a site to watch for Keywords, first bring up the Get Info dialog by selecting the site and clicking on the Get Info icon.

Now select the Watch For Keywords checkbox and select OK. This site will now indicate that Keywords are enabled. When the Smart Mark detects a change, it will also let you know if any Keywords were also found on the website. You can select a special sound to play when a Keyword is found and/or when the website is Surfed. Which Keyword was found is also logged to the Log Window.

Sharing your sites
If you have configured a site that is not available on the Surftron server or if you have modified a configuration of an existing site, you may want to share this site or configuration with others. To do so, select the site in the list and choose the Submit Settings... command in the Sites menu.

If the site is new to the Surftron server it will prompt you to choose a category for it. Select a category and click Select.

The next step will prompt you for comments. The first comment is for the site in general and is what will be shown in the Add Sites list Comment field. The second comment is to describe to others what you would like to say about the specific settings. (Your name and company from your registration will be added to this comment automatically.)

Once you click OK, the site will be added to the Surftron server and any other Surftron users can the add it to there lists using Site Sharing.

Site Sharing
Site Sharing is a new way to share your favorite bookmarks with others on the web. It also allows you to find bookmarks others have submitted into categories in which you are interested. Bookmarks added via Site Sharing are also Smart Marks, and therefore carry with them their configuration.

Adding sites to your list
Clicking the new Find Site icon will bring up the Add Sites window.
Bringing up the Add Sites window, queries the Surftron server for a list of categories. The root list is shown. The Info column indicates the number of sites within that category. If the category contains more specific categories, then the Info column will show noting. Opening a category which contains sites, will list the sites within that category. The Info column for sites shows the site URL and the comment will show the sites comment entered when the person who submitted the site entered their comment.

You may choose one or more sites to add to your bookmark list. They will be added based on your selection within your bookmark window. Once added you will need to turn on the site by clicking the red "X" changing it to a green dot to start watching the site.

Edit Registration Information
When you are running a demo version of Surftron, you will be prompted for registration information at launch during the demo period. The amount of demo time remaining will flash in red above the area where you may enter the registration information. You may also access the registration dialog using the Register menu item in the Apple menu.

To obtain registration information, purchase Surftron and you will receive a registration key. Surftron registration keys are keyed to the Name and Company, so they must be entered exactly as registered.

Enter your name and company exactly as registered and the registration key received after purchase in the indicated fields. Once you have verified this information is entered correctly, click the Validate button. If everything is entered correctly then the Validate button will change to an OK button. If there is a problem, it will prompt you to reenter the information.

If you have trouble registering Surftron please contact support@studiotron.com via e-mail.

Edit General Preferences
The General Preferences contain information pertinent to the Surftron application as a whole.
One-Touch Surfing

Selecting Reset Site When Surfed makes Surftron read a new version of the site if it has been 3 minutes since it detected a change when you Surf that site. This can keep Surftron from detecting a change that you have already viewed in your browser.

The When No More Sites menu allows you to select what action is taken during One-Touch Surfing, when no more sites have any changes to surf to.

The Keyword Surfed popup menu allows the selection of a sound to play when a website is surfed which contains a keyword. If no sound is desired, then select No Sound from the menu.

Smart Marks

The Beep Sound popup allows you to choose a sound that is played when a change in a website is detected (if the Beep checkbox is selected for that site.)

The Keyword Found popup allows you to choose a sound that is played when a Keyword is found in the parsed data from a changed website.

Site Defaults

This contains the same When Change Detected options available per site which specify what action(s) to take when a site change is detected. Selecting Use Defaults in the site Info dialog will use these settings. Also new sites added will also use these settings be default. Changing the values here automatically change all sites which have Use Defaults selected.

Daily Revision Checks

Selecting Check For Surftron Application Update will automatically check with the Surftron server once a day for an update to the Surftron application. If an updated version is found, you will be prompted to go to the Surftron website to download the new version of Surftron.

Selecting Check All Sites Revisions will make Surftron automatically check with the Surftron every day for any updates to any site settings for any bookmarks that are in your bookmark list which have updated versions on the Surftron server. If Automatically Update Out Of Date Ones is selected then the new settings will be automatically downloaded as long as you have not modified them. Otherwise a checkmark icon is put in front of every out of date site which will allow you to manually update the sites you wish. You can also manually check for updates either per site or for all sites using menu commands.

Network Speed

The Connection menu allows you to select an appropriate connection speed. Faster connections allow more sites to be checked simultaneously.

Site Windows

The Auto Save menu allows you to select a timing for auto saving your bookmark lists. Selecting Never will turn off Auto Saving.

Store Documents On FTP Server

This feature is for those who may want to use Surftron on more than one computer but have only one set of bookmarks that is shared. By writing your site lists to an FTP server which accessible from all your computers, you can then have the status of your sites accessible from those same computers. When FTP is activated, you will be asked to read and save every site list to/from the specified FTP server every time the site lists are opened or closed.
